Peter Roskam's roots in the Sixth Congressional District go back to Hill Avenue in Glen Ellyn where Peter lived as a toddler. Forty years later, surrounded by his family and friends, he announced his candidacy for the U.S. House of Representatives on the same leafy street where he grew up.

The seed of interest in government was planted by his fourth grade teacher, Miss Lillian Anderson, at Ben Franklin Public School. Peter completed his "Illinois" project folder and still carries it with him to school classrooms when he visits today.

His years in growing up in the district were punctuated by experiences that left a lasting impression on him. He started a house cleaning service, served as Student Senate President at Glenbard West High School and was a varsity gymnast. He even bicycled across America - from San Diego to Virginia Beach.

He grew up in this district and has represented the suburbs for 13 years in the legislature. He and Elizabeth are raising their four children, Gracey, Frankie, Steve and AJ, in the district.
In just his second term, Congressman Roskam was appointed to serve on the powerful House Ways and Means Committee. As one of the nation's oldest committees, Ways and Means oversees taxes, health care, Social Security, Medicare, and trade. This wide scope of jurisdiction makes it the most influential committee in the House of Representatives.

In the early 1970s, when Kim was three years old, his parents left South Korea for America in pursuit of a better life for themselves and their children. It is a familiar American story but one that cannot be told enough. They left friends, family and jobs to pursue that American dream of higher education, success and prosperity. They arrived in the northern suburbs of Chicago and were quickly enveloped by the kindness and goodwill of strangers—many from the Asian-American community who had made the same journey themselves. And over the years, America gave them what it had promised and allowed them to give Steve a solid education as the foundation for his own success in life. Today, Steve is the first Asian American candidate for Attorney General in Illinois history.

Leader in Legal and Business Communities

Steve Kim is currently General Counsel for Coils, Inc., an international manufacturer of electronic components in the automotive, power and utility industries based in Huntley Illinois. Kim is also counsel at the Law Offices of Rosenberg, Kim and Jimenez where he advises small to medium size companies both domestically and internationally on regulatory and governmental issues as well as general corporate matters. Prior to Coils, Kim was the CEO of DirectAlly LLC, a global procurement and integration firm based in Chicago. Kim was also the Vice President of Government and Public Affairs at Time Warner Cable and Director of External Affairs at AT&T Illinois.

Leader in Government

Kim was Special Assistant to former Governor Jim Edgar where he advised the Governor on international trade and Asian Affairs issues. In this capacity, Kim coordinated the Governor's international trade missions. Kim was also the International Trade Specialist at the Illinois Department of Commerce and Community Affairs where he directed the State's export promotion and trade activities for Asia. Kim was also the Director of Export and International Trade for the Illinois State Chamber of Commerce where he directed the chamber's international trade department. Kim was also a trustee for Northfield Township.

Leader in the Asian American Community

Kim is currently the chairman of the Korean American Coalition of the Midwest. Previously, Kim has served on the boards of the American Cancer Society (Northeast Unit), Northeastern Illinois University Foundation, Korean American Community Services, Illinois State Treasurer Judy Baar Topinka Asian Pacific American Advisory Council.

About Judy

A lifelong Illinois resident, Judy Biggert combines a wealth of experience as a legislator, lawyer, community leader, and small business owner to serve the suburban Chicago residents of Illinois' 13th District in the US House of Representatives.

As the only Republican member of the Illinois delegation on the Education and Workforce Committee, Judy worked to help craft the No Child Left Behind Act, which included her bill to nearly double annual funding for homeless education programs. She is the sponsor of legislation to promote financial literacy among our youth and she wrote legislation, now law, to increase funding for the training of math and science teachers.

As co-Chair of the Congressional Caucus on Women's Issues, Judy worked to improve funding for women's health research, victims of dating violence and child care assistance for low income families. In 2001, she introduced legislation that expands legal assistance for victims of domestic violence and worked with the Bush Administration to pass a bill that fast-tracked money to Afghan women and children for their basic health and educational needs.

In the 110th Congress, Judy is a member of three committees -- Education and Labor, Financial Services, and Science and Technology -and of six subcommittees. She serves as ranking member of the House Financial Services Subcommittee on Financial Institutions and Consumer Credit.

In addition, Judy serves as a member of the following subcommittees: Housing and Community Opportunity; Early Childhood, Elementary, and Secondary Education; Higher Education, Lifelong Learning, and Competitiveness; Energy and Environment, and Technology and Innovation.

Additionaly, Judy has been a member of the Speaker's Working Group for a Drug Free America and the Bipartisan Working Group on Youth Violence.

On the Financial Services Committee, she helped write the Sarbanes Oxley legislation that reformed the accounting and auditing industries in the wake of the Enron and Anderson scandals.

As a member of the Committee on Science and Chairman of the Energy Subcommittee, Judy has helped strengthen our country's basic science research facilities, including Argonne National Laboratory, located in her congressional district.

Cited by Glamour as one of the "New Female Power Players" and by Fortune as one of "The Picks of Congress' New Litter," Judy met and matched expectations. Shortly after her election in 1998, she was selected as the only Member-Elect to serve on the Congressional Delegation to the White House Conference on Social Security. Judy was also the only freshman Member of Congress to be named Vice-Chair of two subcommittees. During her first term in office, two of her initiatives became law: the Cybertipline legislation made it easier to report and track down computer-based sex crimes against children, and another bill that increased penalties for traffickers of club drugs such as Ecstasy.

Judy began her legislative career in 1992, when she was elected to the Illinois House of Representatives to serve the newly created 81st District. She became the first member of the Illinois House in the 20th century to be named to leadership after serving only one term. She was reelected in 1994 and 1996.

While serving in the Illinois General Assembly, Judy's work on state economic initiatives, such as tort reform, property tax cuts, and balanced budgets without tax increases earned her top ratings from the Illinois Chamber of Commerce and the National Federation of Independent Businesses (NFIB). For her work to protect the children and families of Illinois, she was named "Woman of the Year" in Government, Politics and Civic Affairs by the DuPage YWCA in 1996 and was inducted into the Hinsdale Central High School Hall of Fame in 1997 for her leadership in education.

A lifetime of community service prepared Judy for the challenges of public office. She served for four years as Chairman of the Village of Hinsdale Plan Commission and for four years as a member of the Steering Committee of the Hinsdale Citizens for Property Tax Accountability. She has served as Chairman of the Hinsdale Assembly of the Hinsdale Hospital, Chairman of the Hinsdale Antiques Show, and as member of the Board of Directors of Salt Creek Ballet. She served for eight years as a Sunday School teacher, two years as an Assistant Soccer Coach in the American Youth Soccer Organization, and for two terms as President of the Oak School PTA.

She's a former School Board President of Hinsdale Township High School District 86, Chairman of the Visiting Nurses Association of Chicago and a former President of the Junior League of Chicago. She has served as President of the Chicago Junior Board of the Traveler's Aid Society.

A graduate of Stanford University and Northwestern University School of Law, Judy began her legal career as clerk to the Honorable Luther M. Swygert, U.S. Court of Appeals for the 7th Circuit. While raising her four children, Judy ran a home-based private law practice specializing in real estate, estate planning and probate law. She is a member of the American Bar Association, the Illinois State Bar Association, the DuPage Bar Association, and the DuPage Association of Women Lawyers.

Judy was born in Chicago on August 15, 1937 and attended New Trier High School in Winnetka, Illinois. She and her husband Rody are the proud parents of Courtney Caverly, Alison Cabot, Rody Biggert, and Adrienne Morrell, and the proud grandparents of Bray, Gillian and Grant Caverly, and John Henry, Matthew, and Ethan Cabot, and Greer and Charlotte Morrell.
info@judybaartopinka.com

Judy Baar Topinka is running for State Comptroller to put her experience, integrity, and sound judgment back to work for the people of Illinois. As Comptroller she’ll bring those old-fashioned values of hard work, plain talk, and common sense back to Springfield.

Judy Baar Topinka was elected Illinois State Treasurer on November 8, 1994 – becoming the first woman in Illinois history to hold this post. She also became the first Republican to be elected State Treasurer in 32 years. Topinka made history again in November 1998, as she won a second term as State Treasurer – becoming the first woman to be re-elected to a statewide office. Winning re-election to a third term as Illinois State Treasurer in 2002, Topinka became the first State Treasurer to win three consecutive terms.

As State Treasurer from 1995-2007, Judy maintained a strong record of fiscal responsibility. During her tenure, the state earned record amounts of income on investments, money that helped to alleviate the tax burden on working families and made state government run more efficiently. Under her leadership, the Treasurer’s Office helped create and retain more than 13,000 new jobs through an innovative linked deposits program; developed the nation’s largest agriculture loan program for farmers, and helped more that 120,000 families save for college by creating one of the most affordable college savings programs in the nation.

A recognized and respected fiscal conservative and taxpayer watchdog, Judy consistently spoke up when she believed public officials were acting irresponsibly. When Rod Blagojevich wanted to raid state funds, Judy stood up to him and refused to make the transfers.

As the granddaughter of immigrants, Judy learned from a very young age to respect the hard work and sacrifice that families all across Illinois make each and every day in order to make life better for their children. Judy’s parents were small business owners who taught her the importance of living within your means and managing money responsibly; a lesson our broken state government would be apt to learn today.

The Early Years

Born in Riverside, Illinois on January 16, 1944, Judy Baar Topinka graduated from the Ferry Hall School in Lake Forest in 1962, and earned a B. S. degree in 1966 from Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism. Upon graduation, Topinka established herself as an accomplished journalist in the Cook County suburbs, including eleven years as a reporter and editor for several award-winning community newspapers.

She served as a public affairs executive with the American Medical Association and as a public relations advisor to area political candidates and organizations.

A Recognized Leader

After a successful career in journalism, Topinka began her political career as a State Representative from the Western Suburbs in 1980. Serving two terms in the Illinois House of Representatives positioned Topinka for a successful bid for State Senate in 1984 – where she served as State Senator for a decade. Topinka continues to serve locally as the Riverside Township Republican Committeeman.

A Dedication to Public Service

Since leaving public office nearly three years ago, Judy has continued to use her knowledge and background to help Illinois residents. In 2008, she established a not-for-profit financial counseling agency that helps families facing foreclosure save their homes. Located on the West Side of Chicago, the Smart Women, Smart Money Educational Foundation (SWSM) has provided financial literacy and housing counseling to more than 1,000 Illinois families in need.

Achievements

Topinka’s achievements as a journalist and public servant have earned her awards from more than 250 civic, business, professional and social service organizations, including the “Molly Pitcher” Award (1994); The Prairie Institute’s Everett McKinley Dirksen Award for Outstanding Public Service (1998); Americanism Award from the Anti-Defamation League (1999); The Money Smart Award from the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago (2002); Customer Service Initiative for Unclaimed Properties–Excellence Award (2002); National Association of Woman Business Owners Chicago Area Chapter Hall of Fame 2003; the Asian American Coalition of Chicago Grand Asian Award (2003); the Department of the Army’s Outstanding Civilian Service Medal; and the AMVETS Silver Helmet Award (2003).

When examining his resume, one quickly realizes that there are very few elected officials in the state of Illinois with the professional and governmental experience of Senator Dan Rutherford, not to mention his love of life and eagerness to make a difference in the lives of others.

An executive with an International Company and an accomplished State Legislator, The Champaign News Gazette has said, “Dan Rutherford is right now what the Republican Party needs.”

For use when introducing Sen. Rutherford:

Dan Rutherford, the lighter side.

Legislative Accomplishments

Dan Rutherford is distinguished by a legislative career of accomplishment. He was first elected to the Illinois Senate in 2002. In 2009, he was appointed Assistant Republican Leader. His Senate career follows a 10-year term in the House of Representatives, where he served as the Assistant Republican leader. As a member of the Senate, he is the ranking Republican serving on the Financial Institutions Committee and also serves on the bi-partisan Joint Committee on Administrative Rules.

Senator Dan Rutherford has sponsored and shaped legislation intended to help some of Illinois’ most fragile citizens. He was a leading sponsor of important legislation which fundamentally changed the formula for reimbursing nursing homes. Now, reimbursement rates are based on the medical needs of the resident, instead of their geographic location in the state. Senator Rutherford is pleased to report that the new system has resulted in better health care and services for Illinois’ treasured elderly community.

Dan has also been a consistent champion of agricultural interests, promoting legislation to enhance the use of ethanol and soy products. An avid conservationist, he is helping preserve the environment by using recycling programs in his home and offices. To date, Dan has personally planted over 16,000 trees and shrubs on his own property to promote reforestation, in addition to utilizing stream bank stabilization practices.

Senator Rutherford’s legislative efforts have resulted in many accolades from both the public and private sector. He was particularly proud to have been named Legislator of the Year multiple times, in addition to being selected as an “outstanding legislator” by numerous economic, agricultural and conservation groups, to name a few.

The Aurora Beacon News noted that “while his voting record in Springfield draws high marks with conservative [groups], he also has a decided independent streak.”

Some of the recognition he has received:

The Making of a Leader: A History of Involvement

Senator Rutherford began his career as a Legislative Assistant in Springfield following his graduation from Illinois State University, where he served his school, community and fellow students as Student Body President.

At the age of 24, Rutherford coordinated a Congressional District for Governor Ronald Reagan’s campaign. Today, Dan reminisces about driving to O’Hare airport to pick up Nancy Reagan, with one security guard from the California State Police, and driving her to events in Northern Illinois, before meeting Ronald Reagan and presenting him with briefing papers when candidate Reagan came to Illinois.

Putting together one of the best Congressional area organizations in the state, Dan caught the eye of the Reagan National Campaign and was tapped to be the state-wide Executive Director of Illinois for the General Election. Illinois was the bellwether state and where Illinois went, so would the Nation. Illinois delivered for the future President and Rutherford was affirmed a Republican Star on the rise.

Following the election Rutherford was offered a position on the Presidential Transition Team. However, within a day of the offer, he received a call from Governor Jim Thompson offering him a position on his staff in Illinois. Although it was a tough decision to make, Dan opted to stay in Illinois, later stating that he knew it was the right decision because it provided him with the opportunity to join the ServiceMaster Company and serve in the General Assembly.

Reagan & Rutherford

The Business Executive

Dan Rutherford is a graduate of Illinois State University with a Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration.

While on a business trip to Japan in 1984, Dan became familiar with the ServiceMaster Company. A year later he joined the company.

Rutherford eventually became responsible for expansion of the company’s businesses internationally, licensing services in Chile, Brazil, Honduras, Japan, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Guam, Venezuela, South Africa, Spain, Czechoslovakia, Indonesia, Panama, Italy, Mexico and the Philippines. He is with the company yet today, assisting with domestic regulatory matters.

On the Lighter Side

As a young person, Dan enjoyed camping, fishing and adventure. In high school he was a foreign exchange student to Barbados; after graduating from college he backpacked across Europe, and in his mid-twenties he took a few months to lead safaris in Kenya.

He learned to sail boats and crewed for numerous Chicago to Mackinaw Island races, competed in regattas off of Melbourne and cruised the southern coast of Australia.

Before his 30th birthday, Dan joined a small group of 12 adventurers and they took three months to cross Africa in their diesel Bedford truck- camping, bathing in creeks, cooking open fire meals, using sand mats to cross the Sahara, and making sure not to drink from wells that were poisoned because of the war with Libya. He began in Algeria and went south through Niger, Chad, Cameroon, Central Africa Republic, Zaire and Burundi.

Having been on all the continents of the world but one, Dan was determined to get to Antarctica before his 40th birthday. With a lot of luck and a few connections, he found himself in the Falkland Islands meeting a Russian icebreaker with a group of naturalists who were exploring the continent. The former commander of Operation Deep Freeze was a member of the group, in addition to many other experienced scientists. Whales were a common sight, often accompanying the ship as it made its way through the icy waters. The breaker crushed the ice when needed. Dan has particularly fond memories of Christmas that year, which he spent floating on a tabular iceberg in the Antarctic Sound.

Always looking for excitement, Dan skydived in college and learned to fly at a relatively young age, before he decided to master scuba diving. He is an Advanced Certified Diver, logging over 200 dives. His most recent trip was to Curacao, and earlier to Saba Island. He has also taken diving trips to the Turks & Caicos, Bali, Mozambique, Cape Town and Apo Island in the Philippines.

Who Is Bill Brady?

Throughout his life, Senator Bill Brady has worked to make a difference in the lives of Illinois families, whether it was building affordable quality homes for them or working in his community and the General Assembly to give them a better quality of life and a brighter future.

Bill Brady understands the challenges Illinois families and businesses face in today’s recessionary times, because he has faced those same challenges since 1983 when he abandoned plans to attend law school and instead joined his family’s struggling home construction business. He knows how to manage resources and make a payroll. He knows the negative effect that high taxes and an anti-business climate have on the state’s economy and on the everyday lives of Illinois families … read more

Why Bill Brady?

We have a great opportunity as Republicans to give the people of Illinois a real leader who can make our people proud again and put Illinois back to work. For a Republican to win, our candidate must prove an ability to build a stronger Republican Party through the base, must have proven commitment to ending corruption, and the experience and understanding of how important jobs are to Illinois families while maintaining the preservation of our individual liberties, freedoms and traditional family values.
